How have the roles of women changed within the film industry, with particular reference to the science fiction/action/horror film: Resident evil:extinctions?
Hypothesis:
The representation of women has been a key area of development in film. Women were stereotypically presented as as sex objects, specially in Hollywood films. It was not until the early 1970s that feminism and women's consciousness began to influence the production and distribution of film and television. Now days there are many films which are aiming to challenge these stereotypes by having female action starts for example Resident evil, Kill Bill, Tomb Raider and many more. On the other hand there is women still seem to be objectified mainly through their clothing.
Context:
I will be looking in detail at feminist theories and the impact they have had in the change in the representation of women in Hollywood films. I will also be researching articles and on the change in representation of women for example how they were portrayed before and how they are portrayed now. I Will also be exploring the history of action films.
Theorists/Theories:
Some of the theories that i will be making references to include Propp, Levi-Strauss's Binary oppositions to compare different female characters in the film, Other theorists include Laura Mulvey, who talks about the 'male gaze' and i will also be researching other theories and theorists which would relate to my topic.Other texts relevant:
